Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America gave a speech yesterday at the Democratic National Convention and told the story of the time she aborted her first child because, “…it was the wrong time. I made the decision that was best for me,” she said.
“To succeed in life, all we need are the tools, the trust, and the chance to chart our own path,” Hogue stated. “I was fortunate enough to have these things when I found out I was pregnant years ago. I wanted a family, but it was the wrong time. I made the decision that was best for me—to have an abortion and get compassionate care at a clinic in my own community.” The crowd began cheering. “Now years later, my husband and I are parents to two incredible children,” Hogue continued.
Later in the speech she says that the pro-life movement’s real motive is not to stop abortion, but that “empowering women to our own lives” is “what really bothers them.”
#ShoutYourAbortion is a social media campaign that was launched last summer in an effort to “broaden existing discourse on abortion by creating platforms where discussing abortion is as normal as the procedure itself.”
The hashtag has been used over 250,000 times since then with women “shouting” their story about getting an abortion.
